Walt Bartle passed for three touchdowns and ran for one, while Jesse Scott and Dante Coccia each scored a pair, as the Philadelphia Blue Flame police and fire football team opened its eighth season with a 49-7 rout of the California Blue Knights in Las Vegas.
Philadelphia reached the end zone on four of its first five possessions and led 35-7 at halftime against a team of police and other law enforcement officers from Los Angeles and its surrounding communities.
The contest was a non-league game for the Blue Flame, but it counts in the National Public Safety Football League standings for California.
Coccia led the early onslaught when he barreled and spun for a 21-yard TD run on Philadelphia’s first offensive series. After the Blue Flame defense held California without a first down on the next series, Bartle connected with Scott for a 52-yard scoring pass and a 14-0 Philadelphia lead.
Coccia ran for a two-point conversion following the second score, then made it 20-0 early in the second quarter with a two-yard TD run.
A St. John Neumann High School product, the fullback finished the game with nine carries for 73 yards and two touchdowns, as well as one pass catch for 10 yards.
Bartle, from Cardinal Dougherty High, went deep again midway through the second when he found Scott on a post pattern and the speedy receiver raced untouched into the end zone for a 46-yard strike. Scott totaled 98 yards receiving in the game.
Late in the first half, wide receiver Owen McGuire snared a seven-yard Bartle pass for another TD and a 35-7 lead. Bartle finished the game with five completions for 130 yards passing, while McGuire caught two balls for 22 yards.
Philadelphia opened the second half with a 14-play, 60-yard march, capped by Bartle’s four-yard run. Halfback Kirk Butler carried six times during the drive, while Mike Hardcastle and Charles Klink contributed a combined five carries.
Butler ran 10 times for 65 yards in the game, and Hardcastle six times for 25 yards.
First-year quarterback Steve Shippen finished the scoring with an eight-yard run midway through the fourth quarter.
Philadelphia outgained California in the game, 329 yards to 93. Defensive standouts for the Blue Flame included end Kevin Cahill, with two sacks and a tackle for a loss, along with end Chris Dougherty, who had a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, a sack and a batted pass.
Linebacker Ty Armstead chipped in two tackles for a loss, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. Linebacker John Rechner and defensive backs Todd Johnson and Eric Brooks intercepted passes.

Hi,
I have been looking at the season game schedule; and concerned with the information regarding your next game. I am not sure if the updates are not current or confusion with game date and time. The schedule states March 27th home; and was told by my husband it is March 28th in Hershey, PA. I am wanting to know date, time and location of the next game. Also, would like to know if the rest of the season schedule is accurate; so we can plan.
Thank you!
In a game dedicated to their No. 1 fan, the late Larry McDonald, and inspired by a charitable pledge by club president Tony DePaul, the Philadelphia Blue Flame police and fire football team routed the Tampa Bay Sentinels, 33-0, at Frankford Chargers Field.
In addition to paying homage to McDonald with a banner hung behind the north end zone, DePaul announced that he would donate $200 to a local cerebral palsy charity for each touchdown that Philadelphia running back Dante Coccia scored in the contest.
Coccia reached paydirt twice on the ground and once on a pass as the Blue Flame carried a 33-point lead into halftime and refused to allow the Sentinels a first down throughout the game.
Philadelphia’s offensive front, led by starting tackles Quentin Fuller and P.J. Flamer, guards Bob Govaeea and Joe Green, center James “J. Roc” White and tight end Rich Kobierowski, powered through the Tampa defense, allowing the Blue Flame to rack up 175 rushing yards.
Coccia had a team-high 69 yards rushing on six carries, to go with his 40-yard touchdown catch on a second-quarter screen pass from quarterback Walt Bartle.
Coccia also scored on runs of 39 yards in the first quarter and one yard in the second.
Kirk Butler carried 11 times for 54 yards, including a 20-yard first-quarter touchdown.
Bartle benefited from strong pass protection and completed eight of 12 throws for 180 yards and two scores.
Wide receiver Jesse Scott collected three passes for 93 yards, including a 46-yard bomb and a 30-yard touchdown from Bartle late in the first half.
Patrick Hardy caught three passes for 43 yards.
Defensively, Tim Ryder and Ed Pisarek each recorded a pair of sacks, while Kevin Cahill had one. Cahill forced a fumble. Ty Armstead recovered two fumbles. Todd Johnson intercepted a Tampa pass to end the game.
The victory improved the Blue Flame to 3-0 for the season and was their first win in the National Public Safety Football League.
Philadelphia will next travel to Cleveland on April 24 before returning home on May 7 to face the New York Police Department in a rematch of last year’s NPSFL championship game.
The site and time of the New York game are to be announced.
